True to its name, The Cornerstone is an essential element in SFU's UniverCity (http://www.seatoskygreenguide.ca/neighbourhoods/univercity) master plan. A mixed-use residential, retail and office building, The Cornerstone is adjacent to a bus transit loop, an extensive pedestrian and bike-path system, and is in walking distance to a local elementary school, community centre, and proposed neighbourhood park.

The Cornerstone project meets high environmental and energy efficiency standards while providing easily accessible community spaces, amenities, and services. Residents have access to a car co-op and a community transit pass program.

As a registered LEED project, The Cornerstone employs energy features such as ground source heat pump, water conserving dual-flush toilets, waterless urinals, a ventilation system which recovers heat from building exhaust, and a green roof.

The building houses 115 rental apartments as well as over 15 family-owned and operated retail outlets. Services and amenities include an array of restaurant and deli options, a hair salon, a vision centre, a print and copy centre, a computer store, an art gallery, a video rental, and bike shop. Amenities such as this will inevitably save countless off-campus trips for those living and working at Simon Fraser University.
