Summary
The spectacular traveling exhibit illustrates and promotes state-of-the-art green building design, products, technologies and systems, which are all affordable and available today on the market. The display encourages the concept of using less and enjoying more, and addresses the challenges of urban sustainability. Among the Sustainable Condo™’s many features are advanced window systems with photovoltaic panels, energy- and water-saving appliances, green roof technologies and a hot-water recovery system.
The Sustainable Condo™ shows visitors that “they can live lightly on the land, saving energy and resources, and not sacrifice attractive spaces, “says Mark Salerno of Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation.
The Sustainable Condo™ is in keeping with CMHC’s strategic priority to promote sustainable housing and communities.
CMHC is committed to helping Canadians access a wide choice of quality, environmentally sustainable and affordable homes, while making vibrant, healthy communities and cities a reality across the country. The EQuilibrium initiative that CMHC is leading is an excellent example of how we are working with the private sector to advance sustainable community solutions that deliver on the promise of improved occupant health and comfort, increased energy efficiency, and reduced environmental impact.
Like the Sustainable Condo™ exhibit, the EQuilibrium homes being built in various regions of the country will provide tangible examples of how environmentally-friendly homes can become a reality and further assert Canada’s leadership in the development of sustainable housing.
Sustainable Condo™ in Toronto 2008
In collaboration with Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) and the EcoSmart Foundation, the Sustainable Condo™ exhibit was at 8 locations from the Fall 2006 through the Summer 2007 including IIDEX, Realtor Quest, the Green Living Show and the Canadian National Exhibition. More than 100,000 people, including industry professionals and consumers, visited the condo. It now has a home at Exhibition Place in the CMHC Eco Pods (historic Music Building) as part of a larger educational exhibit focusing on healthy housing and green technologies.
Due to popular demand created by the successful 2007 series of shows in Toronto, the Sustainable Condo™ is now open for public viewing and guided tours throughout 2008.
