Summary

The Top of the Annex TownHomes are three energy-efficient townhouses in the Annex neighbourhood of downtown Toronto. The project embodies a new vision for urban infill housing that meets the needs of potential home owners while helping to ensure the sustainability of the large community.

The goal behind the Top of the Annex project is to design and build housing that is energy-efficient, environmentally sustainable and which will help address the ongoing challenges of urban sprawl and greenfield development in Canada’s major cities.

Located in Toronto’s popular Annex neighbourhood, the three townhouses will incorporate a range of energy-efficient features, including a highly insulated building envelope, energy-efficient window glazing, concrete walls separating the units and a concrete topping on the floors.

The Top of the Annex homes will also showcase an advanced ground source heating system to be powered by electricity producing photovoltaic cells mounted on the roof of each unit. In addition, because the townhouses will be situated in an area that is close to schools, public transit and offices, the Top of the Annex project will also make excellent use of the existing municipal infrastructure and could allow eventual home owners to reduce or even eliminate their dependence on owning a car.

Key Design Features:

  • Sustainable infill housing
  • Highly insulated building envelope
  • Energy-efficient glazing
  • Ground source heating powered by solar PV panels
  • Downtown site well-served by public transit
