Summary

The UBC stormwater management pilot project is an experiment in alternative parking lot design with the goal of evaluating how well different design options minimize cost, reduce stormwater runoff flow and volume, and improve runoff quality.  The project includes three alternatives: a conventional asphalt surface with curb-and-gutter, catchbasins and stormdrains; an asphalt lot draining to an infiltration chamber (rain garden); and a permeable lot using a plastic grid geotextile with gravel in the aisles and grass and structural soil in parking spots. This project demonstrated that there is a less than 5% difference in construction costs between conventional and non-conventional stormwater management options.
