Summary

Key Sustainability Features

Based on a regional study conducted in 2003, the following potential reductions have been targeted in the Tilbury Eco-Industrial Park:

  • Natural gas consumption by 300,000 GJ/y or 26%, an annual savings of $2.4 million
  • Electricity consumption by 61,000,000 kWh/y or 37%, an annual savings of $4 million
  • Wastewater generation from permitted industries by 25%
  • Potable water consumption by 25%
  • Truck trips by 200,000 trips per year, or 25%
  • 15,000 tonnes of CO2 equivalents per year of greenhouse gas emissions

The Tilbury Eco-Industrial Partnership (TEIP) is a member-driven initiative based upon eco-industrial networking. Eco-industrial networking (EIN) creates collaborative relationships (networks) between businesses, governments, and communities to more efficiently and effectively use resources such as materials, energy, land, infrastructure, and people. EIN provides a framework to model industrial systems upon mature natural ecosystems.

The TEIP grew out of an EIN & Municipal Demand Side Management (DSM) Benefits study conducted for the Greater Vancouver Regional District. This study identified industrial clusters in the region that would have the highest potential for EIN. The Tilbury Industrial Area, located between Burns Bog, the Fraser River, Hwy 99, and Hwy 91 in Delta, displayed the greatest potential for EIN benefits because of its proximity to ecologically significant areas, the number and diversity of its businesses, and the presence of progressive businesses and organizations.

The TEIP is made up of an advisory committee of stakeholders that includes members from local business, governments, utility companies, and non-profit groups. The committee develops strategies to build community and share/ exchange resources and waste products in Tilbury. EIN Opportunity Assessments are used to identify inhouse eco-efficiencies and partnership opportunities.

The economic benefits to an industrial park include the ability to leverage funds for access to grants, financing, and technical support. Environmental benefits can be extensive including reduced resource consumption, increased energy efficiency, and preservation of greenspace.

EIN’s multi-stakeholder approach allows partners to share savings and develop strong relationships with a variety of private and public stakeholders. There is potential for significant material and energy (and financial) savings in Tilbury. For example Tilbury businesses could collectively reduce natural gas consumption by 26%, an annual savings of $2.4 million; reduce electricity consumption by 61,000,000kWh/y or 37%, an annual savings of $4 million; and reduce potable water consumption by 25%. Through monthly networking events, a newsletter, and a resource centre members of the TEIP develop ways to improve their bottom line and contribute to a healthy local ecosystem.

The Tillbury community identified transportation as the number one concern for the area. To address this concern, the Tilbury Transportation Management Association (TMA) was formed. It has introduced a Translink Employer Pass Program and a rideshare program. It is currently exploring options to introduce a car share program.

DRS Earthwise, a Tilbury based non-profit focused on environmental education and community greening projects is the EIN coordinator and advisory committee secretariat.
