Key Sustainability Features Incinerate Solid Waste, generate steam and sold to adjacent paper recycling mill Uses 250,000 tonnes of municipal waste per year Produces 15 MW of electricity a year The Greater Vancouver Regional District’s Wasteto- Energy Facility (WTEF) was built in 1988 to incinerate over 20% of the region’s solid waste. An environmental leader from the start, it was the second facility of its kind in North America to be certified under the ISO 14001 standard for environmental management. More than a simple incinerator, it generates steam, much of which is then sold to the adjacent Norampac paper recycling mill. In 2001, engineers further improved the facility by retrofitting the mill to generate electricity from its surplus steam.
