Vancouver Landfill Cogeneration Project

5400 72nd Ave Delta, BC

The Vancouver Landfill is owned and operated by the City of Vancouver. Since 1990, an active landfill gas (LFG) collection and flare system has prevented odours and reduced greenhouse gas emissions. In 2003, the City expanded the system and connected to a co-generation system built and operated by Maxim Power Corporation. Maxim pipes landfill gas to Hothouse Greenhouses, and burns the gas there, generating 5.55 MW of electricity for sale to B.C. Hydro, and 75,000 GJ/year of heat for sale to Hothouse. The project results in a net reduction of 40,000 tonnes of CO2 equivalents per year and the recovery of approximately 500,000 GJ/year of energy (the total energy requirements of 3,000 to 4,000 homes). Revenue is approximately $300,000 per year. www.vancouver.ca/engsvcs/solidwaste/landfill/ Technology: Active landfill gas collection and cogeneration system Tours: Available upon request.
