Summary

Suter Brook Village is being developed on a 22-acre (8.7 hectare) brownfield site in the City of Port Moody. The city and the developer, the ONNI Group, conceived the development as a neighbourhood that will retain and enhance the natural environment, in particular Suter Brook, one of the few remaining urban streams in Metro Vancouver that remains a viable habitat for salmon.

The most notable feature of the Suter Brook Village is the large greenway that is being preserved through the middle of the site. The greenway, which will provide significant protection for Suter Brook, covers 26% of the site.

The adoption of a Sediment Control Plan is an example of how the construction process has been influenced by the goal of reducing impacts on the stream. Further enhancements were made to Suter Brook through additions of woody debris, spawning gravel and off-channel rearing habitats. To ensure long-term stewardship of Suter Brook, the ONNI Group has granted $275,000 to the City of Port Moody to be held in trust as a Greenway Fund for the continuing maintenance of the stream/greenway corridor.

In addition, ONNI has committed to numerous sustainability measures, including two green roofs, stormwater management best practices such as biofiltration swales, and the use of durable, low-volatile organic compound (VOC) building materials.

The high-density, multi-family development will help anchor the Inlet Centre area of Port Moody (which also includes the Newport Village neighbourhood HYPERLINK, Port Moody City Hall HYPERLINK and several cultural and recreational facilities) as a major public transportation node, retail/commercial district, and cultural centre. An example of transit-oriented development, Suter Brooke Village will reduce the need for private vehicle use. Inlet Centre is currently serviced by an express bus service and is located less than five minutes by bus from the West Coast Express commuter rail service.
