The Vancouver Compost Demonstration Garden, operated by the City Farmer Society, is one of the pillars of Vancouver's urban agriculture movement. The organization, established in 1978, actively educates the community about sustainable urban ecology practices.

The 1572 m2 demonstration garden, which was established in 1982, is a beautiful haven of sustainability. It boasts extensive green infrastructure including, a composting toilet, green roof, cob shed, organic food garden, natural lawn, waterwise garden, and worm and backyard composters. Visitors can learn how to safely collect irrigation water using a rain barrel. Different kinds of composting units are also on display.

The demonstration garden has become an information hub both locally and internationally. For 32 years, City Farmer has taught people how to grow food in the city, compost their waste, and take care of their home landscape in an environmentally responsible manner as well as providing workshops, tours, media interviews and private consultations that promote further learning and awareness. In 2003, the local government recognized the demonstration garden's leadership in providing service and information about urban agriculture, waste reduction, and sustainability.

Each year, City Farmer staff answer approximately 4,000 Garden Hotline calls, respond to over 80 media requests, and speak personally to another 6,500 people both at the garden and at outreach events. During the growing season, the garden gives two baskets of fresh produce to a community organization every week May through October. The City Farmer website is ranked the best urban agriculture site on the Internet.
