Summary
Correctional Services in northern Nova Scotia are currently located in two purpose built structures attached to the original county court buildings in each of downtown Amherst (31 beds) and downtown Antigonish (21 beds). The facilities are inadequate with regard to the modern housing of in-mates as well as their continued durability and safety.
The general objective of the Department of Justice Correctional Services is to construct one new facility to replace these facilities and to add more capacity to the overall Provincial bed count. The new Northeast Nova Scotia Correctional Facility design features a simple, single storey layout and provides for 198 inmate beds.
